94-Day Trek Across Antarctica, February 2001

The news in Sunday’s paper, history
Was made with skiers: Ann and Liv on ice.
They crossed Antarctica. Allegory
For girls around the world (taught to be nice),
Your life, your spice might break categories!
Inspired, the greater lesson learned, the art,
Is dreaming dreams. Could I sacrifice ease,
A quiet, Midwestern lifestyle? The part
Of me that’s conservative and asleep,
Yet fearful of time passing before leaving
A humble mark, thinks what prize can I reap?
Are seasons numbered for school and seeing?
I fold the Tribune, and look at snowdrifts
With longing I can name and sense a shift.
